September Meeting – The Gardening Garniers

Dean Garnier Garden, Winchester

The topic of the talk at the meeting on the 1st September will be ‘The Gardening Garniers’ by Hardy Plant Society historian, Jennifer Harmer.  Jennifer will be talking to us about the Garnier family who gardened in the Winchester area from 1680 to 1873.  I believe that one of the people she will be talking to us about will be Dean Garnier who was Dean of Winchester Cathedral from 1840 – 1873 and a keen horticulturist and gardener.  The garden above was created in 1992 at Winchester Cathedral and named after him

The talk will commence at 7:30pm with free refreshments available from 7:00pm.  Entry is free for members or £4 for non-members and guests.

 

The Annual Show – 2014

The Society’s 71st Annual Show was held on the 9th August.  We were favoured with a lovely sunny day but not too hot for the plants to be wilting on the show tables.  Entries into the floral categories were up on last year and the benches positively groaned under the host of blooms and foliage.  The vegetable classes and photography also had a good showing but sadly entries into the baking, handicrafts and produce sections were down on previous years – maybe the weather has just been too good in recent months so members have been busier in the garden then indoors!

The slideshow is of a selection of exhibit which caught my eye and I have tried to give a good flavour of the show.
