May Meeting and the future of Kew

Abutilon 'Millie Houghton' New seedling

Our speaker on the 5th May is Leila Jackson of T3 Wall End Nursery near Leominster who will be talking to us about Abutilons.

Leila, along with her father, Eric Turner, are breeders of Abutilons and Salvias.  They regularly have stands at the Malvern Spring Show and Gardeners World Live at the NEC and were featured in an article in the RHS The Garden .  The talk will start at 7:30pm at Colwall Village Hall with free refreshments available from 7pm.  Entry is free to members and £4 for visitors.

We would also like to take this opportunity to draw to members’ attention the cuts facing RBG Kew which will result in 17% of the staff taking early retirement or being made redundant.  There is a strong campaign against the cuts which is being led by Sir David Attenborough – you can hear his argument against the cuts here. Kew now needs your help to ensure its globally-important plant and fungal collections can continue to be used to support plant and fungal science and conservation around the world, and that altruistic and unbiased plant research can continue. If any member would like to sign the petition they can access it via this link.
